AC Not Cooling? 7 Checks Before You Call a Technician

A split AC that blows warm air is one of the most common complaints we get. Before you book a service visit, run through these seven quick checks — many 'broken' ACs just need a reset, a filter clean or a thermostat tweak.

1. Check the thermostat mode and temperature

It sounds obvious, but confirm the remote is on COOL mode (snowflake icon), not FAN or DRY. Set temperature at least 3–4°C below room temperature. If someone changed the mode to heat by mistake, the AC will never cool.

2. Clean or replace the air filters

Clogged filters choke airflow and can cut cooling by up to 40%. Open the front panel, slide out the mesh filters and rinse them under tap water. Let them dry fully before re-inserting. Do this every 2–3 weeks in peak summer.

3. Inspect the outdoor unit

The outdoor condenser needs free airflow. Clear leaves, dust, plastic bags or any object within 2 feet of it. Gently hose down the fins (power off first). A dirty outdoor unit is the #1 cause of weak cooling.

4. Look for ice on the indoor coil

Open the front panel and check the evaporator coils. Ice build-up means low refrigerant or a blocked filter. Turn the AC off but leave the fan ON for an hour to melt the ice, then re-test.

5. Reset the circuit breaker

Compressors sometimes trip the breaker during voltage spikes. Switch the MCB off for 2 minutes and back on. If it trips repeatedly, stop and call us — that points to an electrical fault needing expert attention.

6. Check for air leaks

Gaps around the indoor unit's drain pipe hole or open windows let hot air in and kill performance. Seal visible gaps with insulation tape and keep the room closed while running.

7. Note the age of your last gas service

If it has been over 1–2 years since your last gas top-up or deep cleaning, refrigerant may be low. This is not DIY territory — refilling without fixing the leak wastes money.

Bottom Line

If none of these restore cooling, the issue is likely refrigerant leakage, compressor health or PCB failure — all quick fixes for our certified technicians. Book online in under a minute and we'll usually reach you the same day.
